live news feed

there is now a news feed for rdf / rss / xml enabled news readers available from this site.

ok, that sounds complicated, but it's just the jargon! there are a vast number of programs which support rdf feeds, covering every common operating system available today (even down to hand helds such as the newton, palm and pocketpc).

you may well already have software on your computer that can read these feeds - if you have software that provides headlines from sources such as the bbc, reuters, slashdot, wired, especially if it isn't 'propreitarty' software, then you can set it up for this website as well.

so - what does this software do?

as you've probably guessed, it's used by a lot of news sites to keep users informed with the latest headlines without them actually having to visist the website (commonly seen with news tickers). the software looks up a file on the web server which lists the current headlines, and then displays them to the user, letting him or her click on the ones that they wish to read.

all you have to do is add a new feed to the software using the following settings.

the url to point at is - http://www.thephonicmonkeys.com/news.rdf

if you are asked, the port you need is - 80

just follow the instructions given to you with the news reader (they're all pretty good)

if you are a user of the excellent messaging software, trillian pro, you can already receive news feeds directly into the main window. just head over to their page and download the news plugin; then enter the details under preferences->plugins.

if you're after a new piece of software to read these headlines, try...

dmoz directory

google directory

download.com

I can recommend FeedReader as being an excellent pc program - free, open source, very small and reliable.

finally, if there is an option to set how regularly the news is checked, please set it to a high interval (for example, once every 2-4 hours). this will easily be enough to keep you up to date with the latest, and I don't fancy the server getting hammered by software checking every 2 minutes :)
