about the phonic monkeys

who are the phonic monkeys?

the phonic monkeys is a strange cross between a group and a solo project. although the music is written and recorded (for the most part) by one person, the input of the others, both musical and inspirational, is essential.

umm, yeah... wtf? (the longer answer)

we all work together in a strange crossover of three different bands, covering blues, funk, pop and rock, while at the same time playing with an extreme variety of other people (varying from function bands to originals bands). with such a resource of musicians, and a need to play something different live, i started writing music on my own as a separate side project, squeezing it in between gigging, rehearsing and recording. although 99% of the writing is from one person, it is all tied up by the styles of the seven or so other people that work in this strange cross-over amalgamation.

so, the drums are influenced by the drumer from one band, the bass lines are all entirely influenced (and partially written) by the bass player (who plays in all of the bands), they keys are heavily influenced by the music from all of the bands, and the guitars - well, i just let them get on with it.

then there's the others who haven't actually played or sung on any of the recordings yet (they're too busy writing and recording for lofee - check the links page). so far, they're the people who have kept me musically inspired, and act as a style council, quite plainly telling me what they think about the music, and where they would go with it. they're indispensable!

the ultimate plan is to take this project out onto the stage as a live act, crossing over the electronic side of the music with the live musicians , and using all of the available resources and their expertise to create an amazing live show...

what sort of music do you write? (you made it past the last one. nice!)

we're not actually that bothered about going for particular styles of music, rather the aim is to write and produce top notch music that uses techniques from all styles of music.

you'll find funk with d&b sections, d&b with no bass but plenty of piano, sample heavy, sample light, simple melodic lines mixed with bitcrushed sound design... the list goes on and on, and to be honest, it would probably be more informative if you actually had a listen!

so, what can I do with your music?

well, you can start by downloading and listening to the tracks available on the site (check out the music section). that's always a good place to start! there should be plenty there to be getting on with for the moment.

if you like what you hear, you might like to support the band by buying a CD

can i distribute / use your music?

yes... as long as [deep breath]... it isn't to promote a 3rd party product/service, it is done non-commercially (you mustn't be making any money), our copyright is respected, and we are given full credit. if you do distribute/use our tracks, please do provide the information on where you got them (our web address is a good place to start!).

commercial distribution/use of our tracks is strictly forbidden, without prior written permission from ourselves. (Don't worry, we don't bite - just check out the contact page)

a little copyright reminder. all of the music on this site remains (at all times) property of the phonic monkeys, and we retain full copyright over everything. This includes not only the recording of the songs/tracks, but the songs/tracks themselves. in essence, they're mine, all mine, and you can't do nowt with them without my permission. naah naah naah. or something like that.

do I have to follow those rules?

well, yeah.

hell, I'm following them. I have tracks that have illegal samples in them, and I'm not releasing them in any way. they're not even gonna get heard by anyone until I've sorted them out - so if I'm having to deal with it, it's only fair that you do.

can I help the band?
